Either a diesel engine or a steam locomotive pulls the train. Passengers who are lucky
enough to be riding when
the steam engine is used must be forewarned: Water and soot from the stack deposit onto
unsuspecting
passengers riding in the first open-air car. After arriving at the bridge, the train stops to allow passengers to disembark before it crosses the bridge if they wish. As the train crosses the viaduct, passengers notice an immediate change in the ride-- from the swaying and clacking to a smooth, quiet passage as though the cars were floating high above the valley. Once on the other side, all passengers must leave the train while the engine is switched to the opposite end to prepare for the return trip. Riders have about 30-40 minutes to picnic or walk out on the span before returning.
